On Saturday, March 15th, members of our team had an amazing time at Creek Geeks Field Day hosted by Siler City Parks and Recreation at Love’s Creek! This event brought the community together to explore the beauty of our local waterways while learning how to protect them.
Throughout the day, we participated in hands-on activities that taught us about water quality testing, local creek life, and the impact of pollution on our environment. One of the most meaningful parts of the event was joining a creek clean-up effort — we helped remove large pieces of debris from the stream to support a healthier, cleaner ecosystem. ️♻️
But it wasn’t all work and no play — we met some incredible animal guests, including Ellie, a 20-year-old Mexican rosy boa, and Botswana, a 34-year-old ball python! These friendly snakes even have their own book, and we loved getting to know them. We also learned about turtles, frogs, and other amphibians, and got to investigate macroinvertebrates right in the creek!
Another cool discovery? The Fig Buttercup Project, an initiative to track and manage invasive species that affect local ecosystems. We had never heard of it before, but we’re so glad we know about it now!
We’re super grateful to @silercityparksrec for organizing such a fun and educational event. Our team — and even our little siblings who came along — had an unforgettable time. From science to stewardship (and even a little dancing with a crawfish ), we’re already looking forward to participating again next year!
