Community Empowerment

Program Overview

Launched in 1995, the Community Empowerment Program helps Latinxs to affirm their rights and access the services, opportunities, and resources they need to thrive. We serve individuals and families of all ages, from children and youth to adults and seniors.
Over the past three decades, we have helped tens of thousands of Latinx families navigate life in the United States, overcome barriers, and affirm their rights.

Our work is rooted in trust, cultural connection, and a deep relationship with our community. We provide a welcoming and safe space for individuals and families to seek guidance, ask questions, and find solutions to everyday challenges.

We work with the community to:

  • Overcome language, cultural, and systemic barriers
  • Expand access essential services and opportunities
  • Increase financial stability and overall wellbeing
  • Understand and affirm their rights.

We also partner with other nonprofit and government agencies to help revise policies or procedures that may prevent Latinxs from accessing services.

Activities and Services

We offer one-on-one support to help individuals and families navigate everyday challenges and build long-term stability. Our services are personalized, practical, and grounded in trust.

What we do:

  • Provide individualized assistance, problem-solving, information, and referrals on issues such as housing, employment, health care, education, taxes, and civil and criminal justice.
  • Help families obtain vital documents—including birth certificates, passports, ITINs, and dual citizenship.
  • Connect families to emergency resources, including food, shelter, hospital charity care, and financial assistance to prevent evictions or utility shutoffs.
  • Help workers apply for unemployment benefits and address workplace issues.
  • Offer free tax preparation in partnership with Aging Services.
  • Keep our community informed about their rights, laws, jobs, and other opportunities.
  • Expand access to services through education and advocacy. We help other agencies understand the issues affecting Latinxs and revise policies or procedures that may prevent access to services.
  • Advocate with and for our community members on issues that affect our lives.
